2008 Georgia Amateur Championship

This photograph represents what is on the mind today of the 156 players who will tee it up in the first round of The Open Championship, not whether or not Tiger Woods and Kenny Perry are in the field.

Geoff Shackelford provides a great filter for all of the stories coming out of Royal Birkdale and Daniel Wexler explains why this is  "the major major championship."  Stan Awtrey in The AJC takes a look at the ten players with Georgia connections.

In his local golf report, Awtrey notes that Bulldog stars "Harris English and Russell Henley are helping restore the importance of the Georgia Amateur Championship for their generation of competitors" and that "both have already promised to play in next year's Georgia Am at the Country Club of Columbus."  That's great news for photographers who happen to be covering that event!

Hometown hero Russell Henley won the perpetual trophy of the 2008 Georgia Amateur Championship with a one stroke victory over fellow Georgia Bulldog and 2007 Champion Harris English.  2003 Champion David Noll, Jr. of Dalton finished two strokes back.  Henley's 270 total broke the tournament record held by Tommy Aaron and Allen Doyle.

GSGA.org features a final round summary and final leaderboard.

Stan Awtrey in the AJC says that "the scene at the 18th green was one Russell Henley had dreamed a thousand times."

In the Macon Telegraph's excellent coverage, Jonathan Heeter writes that "Macon native Henley overcomes 4-stroke deficit, 2-hour stoppage to win", Coley Harvey writes that Idle Hour is the "home of a champion",  Jay Adams tells us that "under pressure, Henley delivers big comeback" and Michael A. Lough reveals that  Jay Moseley "finds groove away from pack for top final-round score".

After round 2 at The Georgia Amateur at Idle Hour Club in Macon:

Three players who are certainly considered to be favorites top the leaderboard and will play in today's final group.  Augusta's Jeff Knox still leads the way at -6, with Harris English of Thomasville and Russell Henley of Macon both one shot back at -5.  The cut fell at +10, with 75 players advancing to weekend play.

GSGA.org features a round 2 wrap-up and photo gallery, third round tee times and a live leadeboard for the weekend rounds.

In the Macon Telegraph, Jonathan Heeter writes that "Knox holds on to lead at amateur", Ryan Prior says that "weather forces players to deal with extra work" and Jason Vorhees offers photographs.

Wills Smith

This photograph shows Wills Smith of Savannah waiting by the first tee at last year's Georgia Amateur.  Wills was the first alternate, and his patience never paid off, as a spot failed to open for him.  However, Wills earned a ticket to Idle Hour at this year's Savannah qualifier, and opened with a solid 73 in Round 1.  He also won the 2008 Savannah City Amateur.

The cream is already rising to the top of the leaderboard after this morning's completion of Round 1.  2008 Mid-Am Champ and 2007 Amateur runner-up Jeff Knox leads the way at -6, followed by fellow 2007 Amateur runner-up Robert Sheats, 2007 Amateur Champion Harris English of The University of Georgia and Tim Shaetzel of Atlanta and The University of Michigan, who are all two strokes back at -4.  Russle Henley of The University of Georgia, who lives in Macon and is a member at Idle Hour, stand alone in fifth place at -3.

In the Macon Telegraph,  Jason Vorhees offers photos, Jay Thomas profiles Ollie Schniederians, 15, of Powder Springs, and Jonathan Heeter wraps up Thursday's rain-shortened first round.

2008 U.S. Women's Open

This photograph of Paula Creamer is compelling to me because of the overwhelming, vast quality of the scene- the practice green, the clubhouse and the sky.  It was taken right before before she teed off in the final group in the final round of the U.S. Women's Open, and I can't help but wonder if the "enormity of the moment" hit her at this very moment.  As the crowded putting green suddenly became inhabited by only one, perhaps a certain level of discomfort settled in.

I'm reminded of the feeling described in the lyrics from Camera by REM:   "Alone in a crowd."
